Late autumn in West Berkshire is a beautiful time of year, and there is plenty of things to do in and around Newbury. We know the area well, and here are some recommendations of things to enjoy over the next few weeks, whether you enjoy country walks, competitions, races or little bit of culture.

A walk on Snelsmore Common

What could be better than a stroll in Snelsmsore Common Country Park, to enjoy the trees in all their autumn glory? A network of path leads you through a varied heathland, with a chance to spot different wildlife and plant species. It’s easy to park here and there are even public toilets.

Capability Brown at Highclere Castle

13–18 October

The beautiful Highclere Castle, home to Lord and Lady Carnarvon, has opened its gates to enable visitors to enjoy the grounds designed by 18th-century master landscape gardener Capability Brown. This is a rare opportunity to explore Highclere’s gardens and parkland through unique lectures and guided tours, which include a tour inside the castle – well known as ‘Downton Abbey’ of TV fame. Horse Racing

21 and 22 October   

A late October meeting at Newbury Racecourse is a wonderful way to spend an autumn afternoon. The penultimate flat meeting of the 2016 season takes place on 21 October and sees a seven-race card of competitive racing. The following day, the final day of the flat-race season, is centred around the Group 3 Worthington’s Victoria Club Stakes, and is always an exciting time. This is a family event – a full afternoon’s racing with entertainment laid on for children.

Bucklebury Farm Pumpkin Hunt

21–31 October

Bucklebury Farm Park near Reading has lots of half-term fun planned. Not only is the 77-acre site open for all its usual attractions (including their wonderful deer park, tractor rides and adventure playground) but will also be laying on a giant pumpkin hunt, great fun for all ages. There’s a brilliant café here too. 

Newbury’s Halloween Haunt Hunt

22–30 October

Half-term fun for all the family just has to include the fantastic Halloween Haunt Hunt in Newbury. Collect a set of clues from the special unit in Parkway Shopping Centre, follow the trail around the town and crack the code – and you may win a prize!

Inflatable Obstacle Run

29 October

This unusual Halloween special takes place at Newbury Showground at Hermitage. The 5km course willhave some of the largest inflatable obstacles you’ve ever seen. Go along and watch or, even better, take part to bounce, crawl, climb and slide your way around the course – suitable for all ages.
